The pain we are addressing is that nearly 1 in 5 of cardiac surgery patients develop complications and require readmission to the hospital. Over 80% of hospitals receive readmission penalties with heart failure being a major contributor, and these penalties can destroy hospital margins. Furthermore, readmissions directly costs insurance companies $26 billion annually in avoidable reimbursement costs. Lastly, in the weeks following discharge patients and their families experience increased anxiety throughout recovery.
